Barbecue, music share spotlight at Rhythm & Ribs fest

"....The second annual event, which continues Saturday, features nine local bands along with national recording artists Jon B, who performed Friday night, and Dru Hill featuring SisQó, who will close out Saturday's performances.

Organizer Earlene Corrothers of the Spartanburg Southside Lions Club, which produces the festival in partnership with the city of Spartanburg, said the event is something “the whole family and community can enjoy, in a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere.”

That was exactly what Corrothers was seeing as she looked around the park Friday evening. “The park is so beautiful, you can just bring your lawn chair, sit back and enjoy yourself,” she said."

"The God-driven journey of Crossroads Youth Ranch in Pacolet has led to many success stories, including those told by the young girls who worked at the ranch this summer. It is a ministry that seeks to empower youth “to make the right choices at the crossroads of their life.”

“We’ve learned what can’t fly in the workplace,” said one of the girls from inside a large room filled with — among other things — foldup chairs, a basketball goal and various work equipment."

Dorman High School marching band living in the moment

"I’m very excited about the show this year. The show is about time. It’s called ‘The Time of Our Lives’,” said band captain Justin Henke. The show revolves around the famous dance anthem ‘(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life’ featured in the 1987 blockbuster “Dirty Dancing.”

The show was written specifically for the Marching Cavaliers after the band staff gathered at the conclusion of last year’s season to brainstorm ideas for the show.

The Dorman band will bring the popular song to life with several complex visuals, a few that Henke described as “a clock where the color guard is the minute and hour hand,” and another “hourglass formation.”

Swing dancing is jazzing up the entertainment scene

"There are small groups around the country sparking interest in swing dancing. In Spartanburg, weekly dance sessions are held by the dance group Spartanburg Swing.

For the past three years, the group has grown to host dancers in venues for special events such as Big Air Trampoline Park, Speed Factory Indoor Karting, Hub City Co-op Grocery Store and even at the interactive water fountain in Barnet Park.

Regular meetings are held on Monday nights at Live Fit Now Fitness & Pilates Studio"
